Joseph tells his brothers, those who killed him, that his actions and position in Egypt have been made possible by God. Thus, Joseph's life - one of death and resurrection - is a symbol and sign of God's love for the world. God is a God who loves and purposes good even for those who are violent, angry, and double-minded. The picture of Joseph throwing his arms around his brothers is a foreshadowing of Luke 15, when the Father throws his arms around the son who had rejected him. Ultimately, Jospeh points to Jesus, who forgives his brothers, the disciples, even after they left him for dead. We all struggle to receive this kind of love! It is very hard for us to find ourselves lovable, just like the brothers of Joseph are afraid of him when they see him (v.3). Can we become people who, like Benjamin, race forward to claim and receive the love of God, and thus show others that the love of God is available to them too?
